How is an accountability coach going to help my business?
If you are doing OK already why would you want to hire an accountability coach? Well, one answer will be to get to your destination faster. Think you push yourself already? Maybe you do, but a business coach will push you in different ways and maybe you weren’t moving in the right direction anyway? An accountability coach will motivate you to reach your goals but also ensure that you have clarity and the tools to succeed in getting to your goal. In a nutshell – you will get there quicker with an accountability coach and the journey will be smoother.
Business owners often set their goals too low or too high. Unrealistic expectations lead to disappointment and the start of a pattern – you stop reaching, as you were disappointed before. A coach will help you set realistic goals that can be achieved, and often you will achieve them faster than you thought possible – because you have your own personal cheerleader! They will help you manage the steps to reaching your goal too and have the experience to help you redefine as necessary – instead of giving up. You may think you are getting along just fine but maybe that’s because you are setting easy goals and are in a nice cosy comfort zone. A coach will nudge you out of that cosy hole and show you how to get to your full potential.
If you struggle with getting things done then an accountability coach will be a great investment. After each session with me you will be given tasks to do (homework) that you agree you will be accountable for. Do you really want to have to hold your hand up and say you didn’t do them, erm because… (insert feeble excuse!) You’re paying for your coach to make you accountable so you will feel much more inclined to get your tasks done. Therefore your productivity rises and so does your morale – it’s a win/win.
Utilise their experience
A business coach has normally been in business for many years, and often been self-employed for much of those, so they know your pain points and have the experience to help you navigate through them. Take note of their advice and use it – although it is always good to go with your gut instinct, perhaps you can take on board some of their points and reassess your position on this stance – it’s another opinion, so worth listening to at least.
A sounding board
Has your partner had enough of listening to your business woes? Maybe you have no one to brainstorm with and no one to bounce ideas on. Working on your own can be a bit limiting at times and occasionally you need to find someone on your wavelength who can champion your ideas and reign you in with those that aren’t so practical or worthwhile.
But what exactly does an accountability coach and business mentor do?
They will work with you to identify issues in your business and give you an objective opinion on how things are working, or not, as the case may be. Often they spot things you have overlooked, or are consciously ignoring, that need attention. Together you will discuss your vision and goals and look at ways to get you there, giving you milestones and along the way, helping you celebrate your successes. A coach motivates you, provides momentum and keeps you focused on the immediate and bigger picture. Coaches answer questions with the benefit of their experience and often can connect you with trusted resources and maybe new clients. They understand where you are at and can give empathy with realistic overviews and perception. It’s having someone on your side, whenever you need them – a business support and guide.
Choosing the right coach for you
You can ask for recommendations for trustworthiness and results but remember what worked for one person, might not work for you. Most coaches will give you a free clarity call so take them up on this, and if you need to chat a little longer, then ask – it is a big decision and not one to be taken lightly. That said, the call is not to be asking for advice constantly throughout – find out foremost if you feel you can work together. Remember, it is a two way street – they will want to see if you are coachable and are able to accept advice and be accountable. They want you to get results just as much as you do, so they need to feel your commitment is 100%.
Are they approachable, easy to talk to? Are they listening to you or just giving you their opinion and talking over you? They will be your buddy for quite some time so you need to be able to “click” and work together. You should look forward to your coaching sessions so a connection is essential. I also think it is important that you feel like your coach cares about you and that you are not just another number on a client list. Ensure you feel that they are genuinely interested in you and your business and helping you succeed. They must understand your goals and your vision – it is about what you want to reach, not what they want you to have.
Are they enthusiastic? Do you feel empowered by talking to them? Motivated? Keen to get going? They should be inspiring you to “get to work”. And once you start working together you will find that your insight and intuition about what is right for your business sharpens, you have clarity and are able to make better decisions, are more confident and you feel less overwhelmed – and more in in love with your business than ever. And that’s a great feeling!
